Meet Some Of Our Dedicated Volunteers

Tony

I volunteer because I enjoy working with the railway. During my working life, I worked with the railways. On retirement I needed something to do so I became a member of the Scarborough North Bay Railway. Since joining the team, I have been a regular down at Peasholm, carrying out different projects to help the running of the railway.

After riding as a passenger, I thought what a great way to spend my retirement so I applied and started working on general duties, it was a great way to meet new people especially since I had moved to Scarborough from Norfolk. I then started training as a guard which I liked, then after a while I trained to drive the train, a boyhood dream and I love it. The people I volunteer with are a great bunch of guys, very friendly and it’s a great experience.

Last summer I stepped back from full-time work which had become unfulfilling to do things which give energy and enjoyment. I have made new friends, met loads of interesting people on the trains, learned new skills and got plenty of fresh air. I can’t stop smiling every time I see the constantly changing vista of North Bay.

Our volunteers play a crucial role in looking after our visitors, maintaining locomotives, carriages, stations and track, and operating the railway safely.

Whilst many of our volunteers have an interest in railways, others get involved because they enjoy meeting our visitors and working alongside other volunteers.

Some of our volunteers have retired from full-time work and are seeking new ways to keep active and use their skills. Other spend time at the Railway at weekends or during holiday periods, and enjoy doing something completely different to their day job.

The range of roles vary greatly and include:

  • Gardening

  • General maintenance

  • Operations and more.
